Back home, Joseph's family has a cabin off the Nushagak River, where he had an encounter back in the 1990s. One night while camping in the cabin alone, that was still under construction and had no glass in the windows, he heard a wolf howl far off in the distance that sounded like an imitation.
As he's sitting and enjoying a cigarette, he heard the howl again, however it sounded closer, maybe 200 yards. He became nervous and began to feel like he's being watched when he hears something moving in the trees, but he couldn't see what it was in the pitch-dark night. He goes inside and notices it fell dead quiet outside.
As he's smoking a cigarette outside the window (to keep the smoke out) he hears another howl, but this time it sounded as if it were right outside the cabin. He grabbed his rifle and flashlight and began panning outside, but didn't seen anything, and it goes quiet again. He lights his lantern and hangs it above and pumps it as the light dies down.
He was very nervous, but he didn't understand why he was overcome with that feeling, as he was confident the wolves wouldn't be able to enter the cabin. He stood up to pump the lantern again when he caught a glimmer of eye shine outside one of the windows that he estimated to be 10' to 12' off the ground. He grabbed his rifle while overcome with a feeling of demise, and felt a bump against the cabin. At this point, he assumed it was a bear, and the eye shine was it standing up to look in the window, and he figured it was spooked once it saw him and ran off.
He continued to have the feeling of being watched when he suddenly caught two eyes looking at him. The face was black with a thick brow ridge with eyes like translucent black marbles that were reflecting eye shine. When he made eye contact, it dropped below and he heard it shuffling away.
At this point he knows he's not dealing with a bear and began to call out a warning that someone is going to get shot if they keep messing around. He then hears movement coming from the other window. He looked and saw a hair-covered body, that took up the entire window space about 4'x5', move. With his heart pounding, he moved to the middle of the room, sat down, and began to pray, which brought some sense of relief.
Once he stopped praying, something began to pound on the sturdy log cabin as if it was trying to break it down. It sounded like bombs going off, shaking everything. He returned to praying, specifically to Jesus, and let off a few shots through the window.
He returned to the middle of the cabin, and as he was on his knees, a small rock hit him in the back. He knew then that something was toying with him. He grabbed the lantern and shut it off to reduce visibility for whatever is outside, but he still had his flashlight. As his eyes were acclimating to the reduction of light, he heard movement on both sides of the window.
During this emotional experience, he began to hear something mimic his sobbing. This upset him and he stood up and fired a shot through the window, but caught part of the lower window sill, as his eyes were still acclimating. He heard a scream in the distance that sounded like the imitation wolf howl and a woman being murdered. Behind him he heard a scampering sound, grabbed his flashlight to look, but didn't see anything.
He sat back down to pray, and at the end of his prayer, he heard the creatures moving away from the cabin. The prayer brought relief, and he was able to relax, eat, and take a nap, and his family met up with him in the morning.
