#278 BAD OMEN OR COINCIDENCE

In 1987, a Bristol Bay native named Joseph took two younger cousins from out-of-state to the northern shore of Togiak Lake on a skiff. While the boys cast from a shoreline grassy spit, Joseph stood guard with a shotgun, hearing a crisp, human-like whistle from the brush. Thinking it was a local, he shouted out, receiving no response. Moments later, the intense sensation of surveillance returned; Joseph spotted dark, shifting movement within the tall grass.

Fearing an injured or aggressive bear, he ordered his cousins into the skiff. As he pushed off, a giant, ash-gray skinned, Neanderthal-like humanoid stepped out from the grass line, locking its dark, deep-set eyes onto the boys. As Joseph reversed the skiff, the creature maintained a fixed, menacing stare before vanishing. Later, while performing a loop back to the same area, the entity reappeared, and Joseph fired a warning shot over its head, causing it to bolt across 100 yards of tundra and vanish into the timber.

The final, most terrifying encounter occurred when the group returned to re-fish the site; the creature emerged 20 yards away, rising to its full height—an estimated 11 feet—and stood broad and hulking, projecting an overwhelming aura of pure, malevolent hatred. Days later, after the group departed, one of the cousins tragically drowned while playing near a river elsewhere in the state, leading local elders to label the encounter a 'bad omen' directly tied to seeking out the entity.
