Boat

These shares involve travel and work by boat or skiff—river runs, lake shores, fishing boats, and coastal trips where the water is how people arrived or escaped.

Common threads are banks, anchors, and open water, things seen or heard from the vessel, and parties who came for fishing, recreation, or travel. Browse these shares if you want river and coastal reports with boats in the middle of the story.

In the early 1960s, siblings Agnes and Dean ventured upriver from Portage Creek near the Nushagak River to scout for berry patches. Their day took a dark turn when they witnessed a bull moose abruptly stand up and flee toward them, banking hard to avoid something pursuing it from the brush. A moment later, they heard an echoing, guttural 'elephant seal-like' grunt from the dense willows.

In 1979, two brothers, Derek and James, ventured up the Snake River in Bristol Bay aboard their 32-foot fishing boat for a post-season excursion. On their third morning, anchored in a dense fog bank, they were awakened by an incredibly powerful, sharp 'whoop' vocalization that vibrated the entire vessel. Investigating the shore, they detected a large, dark presence stalking them from the dense grass line.

In the summer of 2019, two retired medical consultants, Candace and Michael, embarked on a 30-foot boat excursion from Seward, Alaska, with friends. Seeking shelter from an incoming coastal storm, they anchored in a protected bay. During the early morning hours, the group was jolted awake by a terrifying, high-pitched air-raid siren-style shriek emanating from the nearby forest. Assuming a hiker or camper was in distress, Michael and the boat owner, Spencer, deployed a small runabout to investigate.

In 1987, a Bristol Bay native named Joseph took two younger cousins from out-of-state to the northern shore of Togiak Lake on a skiff. While the boys cast from a shoreline grassy spit, Joseph stood guard with a shotgun, hearing a crisp, human-like whistle from the brush. Thinking it was a local, he shouted out, receiving no response. Moments later, the intense sensation of surveillance returned; Joseph spotted dark, shifting movement within the tall grass.

Brothers Bruce and David 25 years ago were working on fixing up their Uppa's cabin after he passed.  While scouting for a good hunting spot, they came in contact with a hairy man who ended up following them back to the cabin, where it continued to terrorize them.

Samuel and his son had an experience together encountering a hairy man on the banks of the river while on a skiff.

A terrifying share from Kirk.  While he was camping with his wife and young daughter at their cabin, a hairy man terrorized them until they were able to make it back to their skiff.

A few reports from Paxon Lake and around North Pole, and then Jack shares his story of camping with his wife at his Uppa's cabin near Bristol Bay.

Tony shares his experience from six years ago near the Nushagak River while looking for moose hunting spots.  At one point, a scream was so loud and penetrating that his son began to vomit.

In August 2023, Craig, who was enjoying time with his wife and family in Johnstone Bay, noticed some people on the beach in the distance, so he went to see if they needed help, just in case.  When he was closer, he realized they weren't people and darted back to the boat.

Off the Snake River in Dillingham, Corey shares his encounter while accompanying his friend Bob who was delivering a skiff for sale to an outfitter.

While enjoying time with cousins on a river in the Bristol Bay area in the mid 1990s, Jessie shares their experience while not only trying to retreat back to the skiff after encountering a Hairy Man, but dealing with an intoxicated cousin during the ordeal.

I recount an experience by William, an Elder, while at his cabin in Southeast Alaska back in 1978.  While fishing for crab, he was trying to scare off what he thought was a sea otter stealing his crabs by throwing rocks at it.  He left Alaska and moved to the lower 48.

Samuel shares an encounter from 1969 when running a skiff at the Red Devil mine off the Kuskokwim River.
