In the winter of 2006/2007, a pilot named Brian and his partner Casey established a trapping partnership in the Chugach Mountains, flying a Piper Cub to deploy trap-lines for marten and wolverine. While conducting low-level aerial maneuvers to scout an open marshland meadow, Brian spotted a brownish-rusty colored figure standing motionless in the center of the clearing. Circling back for a closer look, the entity bolted into the tree line at extreme speed. Upon landing and trekking on snowshoes with small-caliber rifles to check their sets, they found every single trap along a valley line either triggered with nothing, or completely missing.
Nearing the final wolverine set, Casey poked at a tuft of fur protruding from the snow; the smell—a pungent mix of body odor and urine—alerted them to something unnatural. While they investigated, a deafening, piercing scream erupted from the timber. Moments later, a second scream manifested, sounding significantly closer, as if the entity were standing over them. Fleeing back toward their parked plane in deep snow, they were stalked by the creature.
After a tense series of standoffs and acoustic barrages, the duo managed to gain flight. During the ascent, Casey reported the creature had emerged into the open, retrieved the discarded snowshoe Brian had lost in his panicked flight, and retreated back into the brush.
