In the early 1960s, siblings Agnes and Dean ventured upriver from Portage Creek near the Nushagak River to scout for berry patches. Their day took a dark turn when they witnessed a bull moose abruptly stand up and flee toward them, banking hard to avoid something pursuing it from the brush. A moment later, they heard an echoing, guttural 'elephant seal-like' grunt from the dense willows.
Agnes, who had been carrying a 12-gauge shotgun, felt a sudden, oppressive sensation in her spirit. Investigating the noise, they spotted a massive, ash-gray, humanlike face peeking through the brush with dark, soulless eyes. The entity, estimated to be over 10 feet tall, exhibited immense intelligence, swaying and parting branches to observe them.
After a frantic retreat to their skiff, they were chased by multiple entities that tracked them along the riverbank. The incident concluded with a high-pitched shriek that reverberated through the river and hull of their boat, leaving the siblings with a chilling, lifelong understanding of the dangers lurking within the Nushagak wilderness.
