#32 SURVEYOR'S SURPRISE

Back in the late 1980s, a land surveyor was hired to plot a large private subdivision in the dense wilderness just west of the Parks Highway, north of Talkeetna. Working alone with an old-school transit scope, his first morning on the job turned bizarre when he spotted a towering, neckless humanoid silhouette pacing behind the willows. Brushing it off as a prank from a neighbor embroiled in a land dispute, he ignored the occasional pebbles and pinecones being thrown at him—until he looked back through his scope and locked onto an ash-gray, human-like face with scraggly hair and solid black eyes peering at him from 80 yards away.

After a terrifying close-range bluff charge sent him scrambling back toward his campsite, the surveyor made a chilling discovery: his camp had been completely dismantled, and his tent, sleeping bag, and heavy cooler were tied off high in the branches of an unclimbable tree. Abandoning his gear and fleeing toward the highway, the surveyor soon realized he was being actively stalked and corralled by multiple entities moving fluidly through the dark shadows. As he neared the safety of his truck, the creatures began snapping 30-foot cottonwood trees directly across his path, violently dropping one right onto his truck bed in a final, terrifying effort to trap him in the woods.
