#33 SUSITNA SADNESS

While searching the woods just north of Willow along the Susitna River, a property owner followed a game trail across the shallows, hoping to find any trace of his senior dog that had gone missing a week prior. Hearing movement in a dense patch of alders about 30 yards away, he stepped closer, only to be met with a deep, unnatural, guttural growl. As he cautiously backed away toward the riverbank, something massive began hurling debris from the thicket. To his absolute horror, a severed piece of his missing dog's leg was thrown from the brush, landing directly at his feet.

Staring into the tree line in shock, he spotted an enormous creature pacing on all fours before it stood fully upright on two legs and began aggressively maneuvering to cut off his escape route. The man sprinted for the river crossing, constantly stalked by the silent, towering entity as it peeked out from behind the black spruce trees. As he finally scrambled across the slick rocks of the river, softball-sized boulders crashed into the water around him. The nightmare followed him to the other side: as he stepped back onto his own property line, he discovered another patch of his dog’s fur waiting on the narrow trail, purposefully thrown straight across the river ahead of him.
