#44 NUSHAGAK DRIFT

While enjoying a private family fishing trip drifting down the lower Nushagak River, Michelle, her husband, and their teenage son were interrupted by a piercing, two-finger whistle echoing from the shoreline. Assuming it was just another angler celebrating a catch, they ignored it—until the sharp whistle was followed by a bizarre, garbled chatter resembling a twisted form of Pig Latin mixed with animal grunts. Determined to finally uncover the source of a strange sound he had heard sporadically over his years working at a local lodge, Michelle's husband banked the skiff, grabbed his shotgun, and hiked alone toward the dense tree line.

As he focused on the trail ahead, Michelle and her son watched in terror from the boat as a massive, dark silhouette methodically moved between the trees, flanking him from the right. A tense miscommunication ensued as they desperately yelled for him to turn around while the creature silently slipped behind him and stepped directly onto the trail. When he finally turned and saw the towering entity standing just 40 feet away, he dropped his shotgun in pure shock. By the time he scrambled to pick it up, the creature had vanished without a sound. After a failed attempt to drift back down the river to photograph the entity, they fired up the outboard to leave—only for the creature to instantly reappear on the trail in plain sight, letting out a final, terrifying scream as they sped away.
