#95 GULF OF ALASKA PT2

Continuing his on-site investigation into the remote coastal rainforest where the Gulf of Alaska meets the Chugach Range, Fred shares field footage surveying old-growth timber, deep moss beds, and rich coastal food sources. Picking his way across spongy ground littered with old fallen timber, he examines potential ground impressions, including what appears to be a possible step-over footprint with visible toe outlines. Along the shoreline, he points out mussels embedded in nearly everything, underscoring the abundance of natural sustenance available in the isolated inlet.

Back home near Pioneer Peak as early fall snow creeps down the surrounding ridges, Fred reflects on the eerie atmosphere that gripped the entire expedition. While the coastal wilderness was undeniably stunning, he recounts an immense sense of foreboding emanating from the mountain directly behind the remote cabin, an area the rest of the group wasn't willing to push into. On edge from his past encounters and the whoop heard almost as soon as they arrived, Fred found himself up alone at 4:00 or 4:30 each morning, unable to unwind.

The research effort was further complicated by technical trouble, with roughly two-thirds of the trip's footage and an interview with Larry "Beans" Baxter turning up inexplicably corrupted. Fred is working to salvage the damaged files, is waiting on audio recordings from the site, and plans a follow-up interview with Beans, all hopefully headed for the next Gulf of Alaska video. Looking out over the bare autumn timber, he reflects on how quickly Alaska's seasons turn as winter approaches.
