#300 That Wasn't a Dead Bear Rampart Mtns @ Bear Creek

In this episode, Fred shares a terrifying account from a retired bush pilot named Doug. Around thirty-five years ago, Doug was flying a married couple over the Rampart Mountains near Bear Creek in a Piper Cub when they spotted what looked like a dead bear resting near a ridge. After landing the plane on the tundra, the couple insisted on hiking up to photograph the carcass, despite an overwhelming, foul odor in the air that smelled like rotted meat and skunk.

The hike quickly turned disastrous when the wife accidentally dropped her expensive camera lenses down a rocky wash. When the group finally reached the top of the ridge, they found an empty depression in the moss. Peering over the edge, they locked eyes with a massive, twelve-foot-tall entity with dark gray skin and soulless, black marble eyes squatting in the brush. In the chaos, the terrified wife dropped her camera toward the creature, prompting it to instantly hurl a rock back at her head. Doug raised his .45-70 rifle to defend the couple, sending the massive entity sprinting up the mountain saddle. The group scrambled back to the plane in a panic, but as Doug throttled up to take off, the creature reappeared—running on all fours through the brush alongside the runway as they barely escaped into the sky.
