Shots Fired

These shares involve shots fired—firearms discharged in fear, warning, or defense during or after an encounter.

Common threads are armed parties, close pressure, and the decision to shoot into the dark or brush. Browse these shares for gunfire in the middle of the story.

Trekking out on snowmachines after the first fresh snowfall west of Nondalton, Jerry and three hunting buddies spotted a small caribou herd being circled by a pack of wolves in the valley below. While watching the predator-prey standoff, an ear-splitting, unnatural scream erupted from the tree line, instantly scattering the panicked wolves. As a large bull caribou attempted to run back to the safety of the herd, a massive, dark arm swung out from the brush and violently backhanded the animal across the ribs.

Back in the late 1980s, a land surveyor was hired to plot a large private subdivision in the dense wilderness just west of the Parks Highway, north of Talkeetna. Working alone with an old-school transit scope, his first morning on the job turned bizarre when he spotted a towering, neckless humanoid silhouette pacing behind the willows.

Gathered around a hunting campfire in 2005, a First Nations elder recounted a harrowing 1968 encounter west of the Kvichak River. While hiking through the sparsely wooded tundra with two friends, they spotted a dark figure darting among the black spruce. Assuming it was a fellow hunter, they called out, only to be answered by a massive Hairy Man that suddenly burst from the brush. The men immediately opened fire, sending the creature sprinting toward a nearby beaver pond, where it dove in and vanished beneath the surface.

A veteran 92-year-old trapper recounts a terrifying ordeal from the twilight of his trapping career in 1984, northeast of Bethel in the remote Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Relying on an isolated backup cabin he typically avoided due to eerie sounds in the distance, his trapping season began smoothly—until he discovered his newly set wolverine traps repeatedly sprung and empty, reeking of a potent, musty ammonia odor.

Ron shared his experience of a terrifying encounter on a camping trip with his young daughter that occurred south of the Denali Highway. Please note, this is one of several shares where I had audio issues.

This share is an encounter experienced by a couple, Tom and Mary, while setting up their commercial set-net fish camp in Bristol Bay. Being the first to arrive for the season, they were alone on the remote beach when they began hearing strange, moose-like calls and noticing dark figures darting between the massive rocks along the shoreline. Their curiosity quickly turned into terror when they realized they were being actively stalked by at least three entities—one standing over ten feet tall, a smaller scraggly creature, and a massive black shape maneuvering along the bluff above them.

Former cabin builder Jeff shares his story about encountering The Hairy Man while building a remote cabin for a wealthy client.  He experienced this encounter with an assistant named Art, a native gentleman from up north who had a previous encounter of his own with The Hairy Man.

This encounter shared by former Alaskan Don is one of the saddest I've recounted so far on this channel, especially for dog lovers.  This story also supports the case that The Hairy Man is no friend of ours, and as recounted in stories all over, they have a real disdain for man's best friend.

This encounter involved a trio on the Yentna River at the end of caribou hunting season in 2019 while trout fishing.

Paul and James, two of my cousins, had this encounter back in 2007 at Harris Creek.  These two cousins were with me during the Nushagak River Ambush encounter only a few weeks prior to this.

A terrifying encounter for Monica and her two kids in a remote lodge in the Wood-Tikchik State Park.

This encounter is from Eric, a fishing guide in the Aleknagik Lake area, that happened with a client in Pike Bay.

I share an encounter from my cousin Nicholai and a few other relatives that happened on the Nuyakuk River.

I share an experience from Eric S that occurred near Cantwell, south of the Denali Highway, with his then-fiance in late August of 2017.

This encounter happened to Dee, his little sister, and two of his aunts in 2017 outside of Ruby, located in the interior of Alaska off the Yukon River.  This is another encounter that demonstrates these creatures are not our friends.
