Oral History

These shares involve oral history—elders, family lines, and long-told accounts passed down rather than a single recent trip alone.

Common threads are tradition, multi-generation knowledge, and community context. Browse these shares for how Alaska communities talk about the hairy man over time.

In the winter of 2006/2007, a pilot named Brian and his partner Casey established a trapping partnership in the Chugach Mountains, flying a Piper Cub to deploy trap-lines for marten and wolverine. While conducting low-level aerial maneuvers to scout an open marshland meadow, Brian spotted a brownish-rusty colored figure standing motionless in the center of the clearing. Circling back for a closer look, the entity bolted into the tree line at extreme speed.

Around 2025, a family group—Walter, Bernice, and their adult son Michael—traveled the Taylor Highway near the Mosquito Fork bridge. Crossing the span, they witnessed three massive figures crossing the road, each possessing a distinct, thick, four-foot-long tail. The entities stood approximately nine feet tall.

In this expansive field exploration of the Knik Glacier valley, Fred and his local guest, Ryan, navigate the treacherous, silt-laden river channels to reach high-altitude crystal harvesting sites. While traversing the open muskeg and willow thickets, the team discovers intense evidence of Sasquatch activity, including localized tree-snapping and heavily marked game trails. Ryan details a harrowing personal encounter where he was systematically stalked for over a mile by an unseen entity that refused to give up its parallel path despite clear wind-scenting.

In the summer of 2019, two retired medical consultants, Candace and Michael, embarked on a 30-foot boat excursion from Seward, Alaska, with friends. Seeking shelter from an incoming coastal storm, they anchored in a protected bay. During the early morning hours, the group was jolted awake by a terrifying, high-pitched air-raid siren-style shriek emanating from the nearby forest. Assuming a hiker or camper was in distress, Michael and the boat owner, Spencer, deployed a small runabout to investigate.

In 1987, a Bristol Bay native named Joseph took two younger cousins from out-of-state to the northern shore of Togiak Lake on a skiff. While the boys cast from a shoreline grassy spit, Joseph stood guard with a shotgun, hearing a crisp, human-like whistle from the brush. Thinking it was a local, he shouted out, receiving no response. Moments later, the intense sensation of surveillance returned; Joseph spotted dark, shifting movement within the tall grass.

Sonny Grant, a Tlingit elder of the Wolf Clan from Juneau, shares deep ancestral knowledge regarding the 'Cannibal Giant'—a figure synonymous with the Sasquatch/Hairy Man. Sonny recounts stories passed down through generations in Haines, Cake, and Juneau of these entities capturing and consuming children left out past dark.

In 1984, an avid fisherman named John was driving the McCarthy Road toward a small lake north of McCarthy. While fishing a roadside tributary, John was repeatedly targeted by stones thrown from the dense alder brush—projectiles thrown with such force they shattered against the water's surface. Intrigued and slightly annoyed, John attempted to investigate but encountered only eerie silence.

Seven years prior to 2025, a couple named Craig and Marcy took their 12-year-old son Daniel to a family cabin located deep in the wilderness beyond the Willow/Big Lake corridor. While clearing their access trail, they encountered two separate pairs of hikers warning of a 'strange man in a fur coat' stalking the perimeter of the muskeg. During the build, they suffered repeated disturbances, including a jingle bell toy being snatched and thrown and heavy thumping on the cabin walls.

I recount an experience by William, an Elder, while at his cabin in Southeast Alaska back in 1978.  While fishing for crab, he was trying to scare off what he thought was a sea otter stealing his crabs by throwing rocks at it.  He left Alaska and moved to the lower 48.

A share from Judy, now an elder, of an incident that took place in 1996 during a hunting party with five family members.

Fred details a field expedition conducted with a partner to an undisclosed wilderness area several miles from a prior track site. While navigating a trail near an area referred to as Grizzly Camp, Fred locates and measures multiple sets of fresh, deep, barefoot impressions in firm mud beds. The documented tracks include small juvenile footfalls demonstrating unique mid-tarsal flexibility, a distinct bipedal trail moving in opposing directions, and an apparent handprint impression.
An account from Simeon and his wife details a daylight encounter along a game trail upriver from Deshka on the Susitna River. While exploring away from their relatives waiting in a skiff, both Simeon and his wife experienced an object or stick lightly brushing against them on separate legs of the trail. Upon returning, Simeon's wife was struck by two thrown pine cones, leading them to spot a large dark silhouette 15 feet away.
An account from Rick details escalating activity on his 10-acre property in the Kenai Peninsula starting in 1988. While clearing the land, his worker Ernie reported blood-curdling, woman-like screams and a deep growl coming from across a creek. Rick eventually stayed at the site and witnessed low-frequency growls that vibrated the camper, and later, an unseen entity pushed the rear end of the vehicle five feet. Terribly shaken, Ernie quit.

An account from Oscar's nephew recalls discovering a bloody tent near Slana where they witnessed four to five robust, 5-to-5.5-foot-tall, lemur-like monkey creatures with human faces fleeing into the brush while making strange monkey noises. Another experience shared by Oscar describes spotting three 5-foot-tall creatures with 3-foot-long tails running along the Copper River shoreline like rabbits before rapidly ascending a steep dirt bank.

An experience shared by an Ahtna Elder named Agatha recalls her childhood near Horse Creek, where her family routinely heard distant screams while berry picking. She also recounted an incident at their fish camp when her uncle and brother-in-law found their fish wheel intentionally jammed with a large log. While working to clear it, they heard whistling from the shore and turned to find a hairy man crouching on the bank. After shouting at it, the brother-in-law fired a shot into the air, causing the entity and two other unseen companions to crash away through the brush.
